According to the 2011 Census, India's overall literacy rate is 72.98%, with 64.63% for females and 80.9% for males. Rural women saw the most significant improvement in literacy rates over the past decade, increasing by 24%. 

Kerala boasts the highest literacy rates among states and union territories, with 96.1% for males and 92.1% for females. In contrast, Bihar has the lowest rates at 71.2% for males and 51.5% for females.

The gender gap in literacy is narrow in Meghalaya, Kerala, and Mizoram, with less than a 5% difference between male and female literacy rates. However, states like Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh have a significant gap of 20% or more, with Rajasthan having the widest disparity.

Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (AGAMT – II)

Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam-II (AGAMT-II) is a five-year initiative (2021-2026) aimed at comprehensive rural development. It focuses on equitable resource distribution across all panchayats in the state. By leveraging 16 government departments, AGAMT-II addresses critical infrastructure needs and promotes holistic development.

Each year, approximately 20% of village panchayats at the block level are selected for the scheme. This selection process is carried out at the district and state levels to ensure a total of 20% of panchayats are covered annually. With an annual budget of around Rs. 1200 crore, AGAMT-II aims to positively impact rural communities over the five-year period.
