CBEC launches mobile app for GST
Central Board of Excise and Customs today launched a mobile application for Goods and Services Tax (GST) to inform the taxpayers of the latest updates on GST. Launching the App, in New Delhi, Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar said, through this app, taxpayers can readily access a host of GST information such as migration to GST-Approach and guidelines for migration, model GST Law, IGST Law and GST compensation law. 

Govt decides to issue Sovereign Gold Bonds 2016-17-Series IV
Government has decided to issue Sovereign Gold Bonds 2016-17-Series IV. In a statement, Finance Ministry said that applications for the bonds will be accepted from 27th of this month to the 3rd of March. The bonds will be issued on 17th of next month. These will be sold through banks, Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited, designated post offices and recognised stock exchanges.

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat visits Southern Command hqs in Pune
Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat visited the headquarters of Southern Command in Pune yesterday. This was General Rawat's first visit to the Headquarters of Southern Command, the largest geographical formation of the Indian Army, after taking charge in December.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar arrives in Dhaka on two-day visit
Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar today arrived in Dhaka on a two-day visit during which he will meet top Bangladeshi leadership and hold discussions on bilateral issues, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's proposed India visit.

Talk with India 'positive', China says
China said today that the recent strategic dialogue with India is of positive significance to ties as extensive agreements were reached. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang told a media briefing in Beijing that the dialogue has reached the goal as expected and is of positive significance to the bilateral relations. India has welcomed an initiative by UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, to create a new office for counter-terrorism and stressed the nations should not allow turf battles to hobble the proposal. India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin said that no single nation alone can tackle this menace decisively. He was speaking during an informal meeting on strengthening of the capability of the UN system in implementing Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. 

Astronomers discover 7 new Earth-sized exoplanets that may sustain life
Astronomers have discovered for the first time seven new Earth-sized exoplanets that may be able to sustain life. Lead researcher Michael Gillon, with the University of Liege in Belgium said, these exoplanets are orbiting a star 39 light years away. He said, they could have some liquid water and maybe life. Astronomers have found other seven-planet systems before, but this is the first time to have so many Earth-sized worlds. All of them orbit at the right distance to possibly have liquid water somewhere on their surfaces. The planets closely circle a dwarf star named Trappist-1, which at 39 light years away makes the system a prime candidate to search for signs of life. Only marginally larger than Jupiter, the star shines with a feeble light about 2,000 times fainter than Earth's sun.

Indians largest group of foreign skilled workers in UK
Indians are the largest group of skilled workers granted visas to live and work in the UK last year at 57 per cent. According to official figures released in London today, Indians accounted for 53,575 skilled work visas granted in 2016, and US nationals are the second largest group at 9,348.

India's GDP projected to slow to 6.6% due to demonetisation Strains: IMF
India's growth is projected to slow to 6(point)6 per cent in 2016-17 fiscal due to the strains that have emerged in the economy as a result of temporary disruptions caused by demonetisation. The post-November 8, 2016 cash shortages and payment disruptions caused by the currency exchange initiative have undermined consumption and business activity, posing a new challenge to sustaining the growth momentum. India's economy grew at 7.6 per cent in 2015-16.

Indian digital payments market to reach $500 bn by 2020
Digital payments industry in India is expected to reach 500 billion US dollars by 2020, with over 50 per cent of Internet users in the country will be using it by then. The report by global telecom body GSM Association and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) said that more than 50 per cent of India's Internet users will use digital payments by 2020, when the size of digital payments industry in the country will be 500 billion dollars. In India, BCG estimates that digital technologies will influence up to 45 per cent of all retail sales by 2025. The report counts government's plans to build 100 smart cities across the country and 'Digital India', which aims to increase the optical fibre network to thousands of villages where two-thirds of the population lives.

John-John Dohmen, Naomi Van named best hockey players of 2016
Belgium's John-John Dohmen and Netherlands' Naomi Van were named as male and female Hockey Federation's Player of the Year award. In an event hosted in Chandigarh today, the Olympic silver medallists Dohmen and Naomi were handed these awards. Great Britain's Olympic gold medallist Maddie Hinch won the Hockey Stars 2016 female Goalkeeper of the Year award.

1st Gramin Khel Mahotsav to be held next month in Delhi: Vijay Goel
Sports Minister Vijay Goel today announced that 1st Gramin Khel Mahotsav will be held from 25th to 31st of next month in New Delhi. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi today, Mr Goel said the games will be held in five sports disciplines Athletics, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Volley Ball and Wrestling. He said a need has been felt to deepen the sports culture among the rural youth.

Sports Minister felicitates Indian blind cricket team
Sports Minister Vijay Goel today felicitated Indian blind cricket team which recently won the T-20 World Championship. Mr Goel felicitated team captain Ajay Reddy and other members with momentos. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Goel said, the Ministry will give 20 lakh rupees to the team.
