Government allots 78 cents for onsite museum in Keeladi
  • The state government has finally decided to allot 78 cents of land for the construction of a site museum in Keeladi to display the artefacts that an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) team has excavated from the site. Even though an official order was not issued on this, sources said the collector has surveyed the land and allotted the 78 cents in the village in Sivaganga district. It was in 2014 that the ASI Bengaluru team, headed by K Amarnath Ramakrishna, began excavation on oneand-a-half-acres of the 80 acre site on the banks of River Vaigai, 13km from Madurai. Considered one of the most remarkable excavations conducted in the state so far, the team came up with a treasure trove, an ancient urban civilization, which they compare to Harappa. The excavated materials include brick structures, industry-like furnaces, intricate jewellery and, most significantly, pottery with Tamil Brahmi script. The team could compare the findings (pertaining to 300BC and 300AD) with some prominent Sangam-period literature, referring to Keeladi in that period.
India conveys its concern to China over Brahmaputra tributary blocking
  • After China blocked a tributary of the Brahmaputra river, India said it had conveyed to Chinese authorities that they should be mindful of the interests of the lower riparian areas while undertaking any project on the river. China had announced last week that it had blocked a tributary of the river, which flows into Arunachal Pradesh and Assam before entering Bangladesh, for work on a hydropower project in Tibet. India is likely to take up the issue with China through the expert-level mechanism which the two countries have for discussing issues related to cross-border rivers.
Paris climate agreement ratified in race against time
  • The historic Paris climate pact dashed across the ratification finish line on Wednesday to diplomatic cheers. “A turning point for the planet,“ said US President Barack Obama. “A defining moment for the global economy,“ enthused Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever and chairman of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. But the cold, hard reality of what is needed to fulfil the Paris Agreement's pledges will soon bite, experts warned. Scientists have forecast that average global temperatures -already one degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) above the pre-industrial era benchmark -could sail past 1.5 C (2.7 F) within a decade, and 2.0 C (3.6 F) by mid-century.
Gandhi statue at Ghana university to be removed
  • Ghana has expressed its intention to remove a statue of Mohandas Gandhi from a university in the capital, citing a controversy over what critics call his “racist identity .“ But the government made clear the move would be for the statue's safety , telling the critics that “we must remember that people evolve.“ Professors at the University of Ghana launched a petition last month calling for the removal of the statue, which was unveiled by President Pranab Mukherjee in June. Ghana's foreign affairs ministry said the government “would...want to relocate the statue from the University of Ghana to ensure its safety .'' Obadele Kambon, one of the petition's organisers, urged the government to send the statue back to India.
