Atomic Energy in India

The Atomic Energy Commission  was set up in 1948. The Department of Atomic Energy was formed in 1954

Department of Atomic Energy - Research Centre


1. Bhbha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) - Mumbai: It was setup in 1957 as the Atomic Energy Establishment at Trombay  and it was renamed as BARC in the memory of its Founder Dr.Homi Bhaba.

2. Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) - Kalpakkam in Tamilnadu: It was established in 1971.


3. Centre for Advanced Technology (CAT) - Indore: It was set up in 1984.

4. Variable Energy Cyclotron Centres (VECC) - Kolkata.  It was set up in 1977.

5. Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) - Hyderabad

1. Heavy Water Board (HWD) - Mumbai

2. Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) - Hyderabad

3. Board of Radiation & Isotope Technology (BRIT) - Mumbai.
