National Voters’ Day being observed
The Election Commission of India will celebrate the 7th National Voters’ Day across the country today for enhanced participation of citizens in the electoral process. The National level function will be held in New Delhi. President Pranab Mukherjee will give away awards for best electoral practices to District Collectors, Superintendents of Police and other functionaries involved in election management. Mr Mukherjee will administer Voters Day Pledge to participants. Voter identity cards will also be distributed to newly eligible young voters on the occasion. 5th January is also the foundation day of the Election Commission, which came into being on this day in 1950.

President Mukherjee to address nation on eve of 68th Republic Day
President Pranab Mukherjee will address the nation today on the eve of the 68th Republic Day. The address will be broadcast from 7 PM on the national network of All India Radio and telecast over all channels of Doordarshan in English followed by Hindi versions. AIR will broadcast the regional language versions from 9:30 PM. Broadcast of the address in English and Hindi on Doordarshan will be followed by broadcast in regional languages by regional channels of Doordarshan.

Govt to carefully examine CM panels BCTT recommendations
Government says it has not yet taken any final view on the recommendations of the Committee of Chief Ministers on Digital Payments. Finance Ministry issued a statement to this effect today. It said the recommendations will be carefully examined and appropriate decisions will be taken in due course. The media has reported various aspects of the recommendations made by the Committee, including the recommendation relating to levy of Banking Cash Transaction Tax on transactions of 50,000 rupees and above. 

Political parties not to seek votes in name of religion, caste, race, community or language: EC
The Election Commission has asked all political parties not to seek votes in the name of religion, caste, race, community or language in any manner as it is in contravention of Supreme Court judgement. In a letter to the Presidents, General Secretaries, Chairpersons and Conveners of all recognized national and state political parties, the commission drew their attention to recent judgement of the 7 judge Constitution Bench of Supreme Court . 

Kiren Rijiju lays foundation stone of Integrated Check Post near Indo-Bangla border
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju today laid the foundation stone of Meghalaya's first Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Dawki in West Jaintia Hills district near the Indo-Bangladesh border. Mr Rijiju said the Check Post being set up to facilitate bilateral trade, would increase the volume of local business by way of exporting local products. He added that Meghalaya would import Bangladeshi goods through the check post.

India and UAE sign 14 agreements after delegation level talks between PM Modi & visiting Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi
India and the UAE today inked 14 agreements in various areas including in defence, maritime transport, comprehensive strategic partnership, shipping, agriculture and allied sector, trade, oil storage and management, energy efficiency, road transport and highways and prevention and combating human trafficking. The agreements were signed after delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.

Punjab: 75 thousand students, security personnel to make human chain for voter awareness on Jan 31
To motivate people use their franchise in the Punjab Assembly Elections, more than 75 thousand students, security personnel, SVEEP activists and common people will make a human chain on 31st of this month covering the area from NIT Jalandhar to Phillaur township. 

11,000 villages become drought-free: Maharashtra CM
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that as many as 11,000 villages have become drought-free in the State while 4,000 of them have further become 'water neutral' or self-sufficient in water resources. Mr Fadnavis alongwith his Madhya Pradesh counterpart Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated a national conclave on 'Good Governance through people's participation' at Uttan near Mumbai on Friday.

Andhra Pradesh on its way to become Open Defecation Free
Andhra Pradesh is on its way to becoming Open Defecation Free (ODF) within the next few months. This has been apprised by the State government to the Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Parameswaran Iyer who visited the State yesterday. Mr. Iyer was in Vijayawada and Guntur to assess the progress of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) and interacted with villagers and school children in Guntur district.

Kerala: Civic body to impose complete ban on all kinds of plastic
In Kerala, the civic body in capital Thiruvananthapuram has decided to impose a complete ban on procurement, storage and sale of all kinds of plastic and non-woven polypropylene carry bags from the 1st of March.

Odisha: Two IPS officer selected to receive President’s police medal on Republic Day
Two Odisha-cadre IPS officer, Sushant Kumar Nath and Dilip Kumar Das have been selected to receive the President’s police medal for distinguished service on the Republic Day tomorrow. Nath is currently officiating as IG (Modernisation) while Das is the Bhadrak Superintendent of Police.

Trump signs executive orders to advance Keystone XL, Dakota Access pipelines
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to advance controversial Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines. His latest actions to overturn the policies of former President Barack Obama, the nation's chief executive he replaced four days ago. Mr Trump signed executive orders calling for new negotiations to allow construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which is designed to carry Canadian oil sands crude through the US to refineries near the Gulf of Mexico, and the Dakota Access pipeline sending oil from the state of North Dakota south to Illinois.

Senate confirms Trump's Nominee for US Ambassador to UN
US Senate has confirmed President Donald Trump's nominee for U S Ambassador to the United Nations by a decisive margin. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley won strong support for the UN post despite her lack of foreign policy experience. Senators voted 96-4 on Haley's nomination. 

US President invited to address joint session of Congress on February 28
US President Donald Trump was today invited to address a joint session of the Congress on February 28. House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters at a news conference that he is inviting President Trump to address a joint session of the Congress. 

Japan launches large military satellite from base on country’s southern-most islands
Japan has launched a large military satellite from a base on the country’s southern-most islands, just across from China, an area in which Tokyo and Beijing have clashed over the gas-rich East China Sea. The X-band satellite successfully reached orbit after blasting off on the back of a Mistubishi H-IIA rocket, a spokesman from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries said yesterday. Tokyo expects to send three X-band satellites into orbit over the coming years to quadruple the nation’s broadband capacity.

UN condemns Israeli settlement plan in West Bank
The United Nations and the European Union have denounced recent Israeli initiatives to accelerate settlement construction in occupied Palestinian territory. The United Nations has condemned Israeli plans to build more settlements in the occupied West Bank. Spokesman for the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric said any unilateral decision can be an obstacle to the two-state goal is of grave concern. He said there is a need for the two parties to engage in a bonafide negotiation to reach the goal of two states.

Trump to sign executive orders restricting immigration, ban on refugees
President Donald Trump will begin rolling out executive actions today with the signing of executive orders restricting visas and immigration, as well as the entry of refugees. According to Administration officials, President is due to speak today to employees at the Department of Homeland Security, which handles immigration and sign orders on refugees and national security.

100% FDI under consideration in food processing sector: Sadhvi Niranjan
Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti has said cent percent Foreign Direct Investment in food processing sector is being actively considered by the Union Government. Addressing a conclave organized by the ASSOCHAM in Chennai on the sunrise sector, she expressed hope, the Finance Ministry’s approval for the proposal would be secured at the earliest to give a boost to the industry

Cooperative banks can't accept deposits under PMGKY: Govt
Government clarified that Co-operative Banks are not authorised to accept deposits under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Deposit Scheme (PMGKDS). The scheme allows assessees to disclose previously unaccounted and undeclared income under its ambit. The PMGKDS permits voluntary declarations of previously undisclosed income with an effective tax rate of 50% and requires assessees to deposit a further 25% of such wealth into a four-year interest-free deposit.

First flight under UDAN scheme to take off in February 2017
The first flight is likely to take off next month under the government's ambitious regional connectivity scheme-UDAN. The scheme UDAN (Ude Desh Ke Aam Naagrik), seeks to boost regional air connectivity and provides various incentives to airlines. The fare for a one hour journey of approximately 500 kilometre on a fixed wing aircraft or for a 30 minute journey on a helicopter will be capped at two thousand 500 rupees under the scheme. 

Bilateral trade between UAE & India account for US$ 17 billion during 1st half of 2016
India is the UAE's second largest trading partner after China. The UAE, on the other hand, is the largest Arab investor in India and the 11th foreign investor, in terms of Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs). The total value of Emirati investments in India was estimated at US$ 9 billion in 2015

Vijay Goel praises Lodha recommendations
Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel reckons that many of the recommendations made by the Lodha panel are very well and the government would bring new sports code after considering different viewpoints. Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the first ever Indian Women's football league yesterday, Mr Goel said, firstly, they will look at the recommendations made by the Lodha panel, and then they will think of bringing the new sports code. 

Pan-India initiative for girls football launched
On the occasion of the National Girl Child Day today, a pan-India football based programme for girls between the age of 10 to 15 years has been launched. The first event was held in New Delhi where over 700 girls took part from across Delhi NCR. The programme named " Khelegi toh Khilegi" was flagged off by Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and MP Meenakshi Lekhi. It aims at developing girls football in the country, with an intention to empower the girl child.

Mithali Raj to lead India in ICC Women's World Cup qualifier
Mithali Raj will be leading the Indian women's cricket team in the ICC World Cup qualifier scheduled to be held in Colombo beginning from 7th of next month. The final will be played on 21st February. It will be a 10-team competition. India, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka are among the leading sides participating in the 15 day tournament.
