CAG lens on entities showing agri income to claim tax exemption

• The Comptroller and Auditor General has initiated an audit of entities claiming tax exemption on agricultural income amid suggestions from some political parties and income tax authorities that a blanket exemption be done away with and tax be levied after a threshold. The auditor has written to the finance ministry seeking details of entities which have declared agricultural income and the amount of tax exemption granted to them. Recently, tax authorities had raised concerns about possible misuse of the exemption availab le to agricultural income, although the government has clearly said that there was no move to impose tax.

• Avoiding triumphalism or even a direct comment on the cross-LoC strikes on terror camps, PM Narendra Modi said on Sunday that India had never attacked any country nor coveted anyone's territory, while it contributed immensely during the two world wars.The PM's comments at a function here seemed intended to eschew chest-thumping and reflected the responses of BJP spokespersons who have avoi ded jingoism despite the nationalist fervour on social media and among the BJP cadre.

95% of rape accused known to victims, reveals 2015 data

• Ninety-five per cent of the perpetrators in rape cases in 2015 were known to their victims, figures released by by the National Crime Records Bureau reveal. And the home or workplace seems to be the most dangerous place for a woman -in 40% cases, the perpetrator was a relative, neighbour or coworker.

Nagpur youth first Indian to finish 246km Spartathlon

• 23-year-old Kieren D'Souza became the first Indian to complete the gruelling 246km Spartathlon from Athens to Sparta in Greece on October 1. In the 34-year history of the race, it was for the first time that the Indian flag fluttered over the finish line in Sparta near the statue of the legendary king, Leonidas. Kieren, who hails from Nagpur, completed the race in 33 hours 02 minutes and 25 seconds, finishing in the 86th spot among the 370 participants. The cut-off time was 36 hours.

India becomes 62nd country to ratify Paris climate deal

• India formally joined the Paris Agreement on climate change by submitting its instrument of ratification to the United Nations in New York on Sunday , the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The country , however, ratified the deal with certain conditions keeping its national priorities in mind. It clearly referred to India's commitment towards its development agenda which aims to eradicate poverty and take care of the basic needs of all its citizens.Though the country has not used the word `condition', it made amply clear in its `declaration' that India would be able to take climate actions provided it got financial and technological support to move towards a low carbon growth path.

India ratifies historic Paris climate deal at U.N.

• India ratified the Paris Agreement on Climate Change by depositing the instrument of ratification with the United Nations on Sunday, the 147th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. A special event was organised to mark the occasion, also observed as the International Day of Nonviolence, at the UN headquarters. India is the 62nd country to ratify the agreement. The agreement will enter into force one month after 55 countries that account for 55 percent of global emissions ratify the agreement.

Indian-origin teen wins Google Science Fair prize-2016

A 16-year-old Indian-origin South African teen has won a $50,000 scholarship, the grand prize at the annual Google Science Fair for her work using orange peel to develop a cheaper “super-absorbent material” that helps soil retain water.Kiara Nirghin, a Grade 11 student at private school St Martin’s, submitted her project titled ‘No More Thirsty Crops’ which was aimed at tackling the severe drought plaguing South Africa. 

Her solution to the problem of drought uses orange and avocado fruit peel that is normally discarded. The Google Science Fair is a programme for budding scientists between the ages of 13 to 18, who are invited to solve the world’s biggest challenges using science and technology.

Ninety-five per cent of the perpetrators in rape cases in 2015 were known to their victims, figures released by by the National Crime Records Bureau reveal. Police across India lodged around 34,651 cases under section 376 of the IPC last year. The number of victims were 34,771.Maharashtra figured in the top three states with the most number of rape cases lodged, with Madhya Pradesh leading the list after registering 4,391 offences. Maharashtra was a close second with 4,144 cases, followed by Rajasthan (3,644). A look at the offender list shows that an overwhelming perpetrators are known to the victim. Over 40% form the familyneighbourco-worker axis of offenders. Neighbours are the worst offenders and are accused in 9,508 cases (28.72%), a blood relative -grandfatherfatherbrotherson were accused in 488 cases, close family members in 891, extended relatives in 1,788, employers or co-workers in 557 and live-in partners or ex husbands in 705 cases. False promise of marriage figured in 7,655, the largest block of offenders -11,506 cases -were classified as other known persons.In 1.553 cases, the offenders were not identified.

Sexual offences against children, prosecuted under the new Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, shows a similar trend. Of the 8,800 POCSO cases, in 8341 (94%) instances, the accused were known to the victim

Rs 65,000cr revealed in black money disclosure scheme. 

Surpassing expectations, the Centre's move to unearth black money received a robust response with the total amount declared under the Income Declaration Scheme totalling `65,250 crore. Finance minister Arun Jaitley announced that 64,275 declarations had been made under the scheme which was open for four months and closed on September 30.

Tamil Nadu, Pondy appoint Cauvery board members

As the deadline for appointing state representatives to the Cauvery Management Board ended at 4.00pm on Saturday , only Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have appointed their representatives. The state government appointed Tamil Nadu Cauvery Technical Cell chairman R Subramanian as a part-time member of the board and Puducherry has appointed its public works department chief engineer P Swaminathan as its representative.Supreme Court on Friday had directed Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to appoint members to the board before 4 pm on Saturday . Attorney general Mukul Rohatgi told the Supreme Court that the board would proceed to Cauvery basin areas in both the states to take stock of the water storage and report back to the court on October 6.

800 years old panchaloha idols unearthed

Four panchaloha idols, likely belonging to the Chola-era dating back 800 years, were unearthed near Ammapettai in Thanjavur by workers while digging for the expansion of a government school at Kambarnatham village.The construction workers were digging inside the government high school campus during the late hours on Friday , when the discovery was made.While they were making a crater to construct a building for additional classrooms using a poclain machine, the driver saw something in the mud.

Maldives joins Saarc summit boycott, slams global terror

Maldives on Friday condemned terrorism and urged for creation of an environment conducive for holding the now-cancelled 19th Saarc Summit.In a statement, the Maldives foreign office said the appeal follows the decisions by some of the Saarc member states who have expressed their inability to attend the Summit scheduled for November due to terrorism, and threats to regional and international peace.

Baloch leader seeks global support for region's freedom

Baloch leader Mazdak Dilshad Baloch sought global support on Saturday in their fight for `freedom' and against `atrocities' and violation of human rights by the Pakistani establishment in the restive region.At a seminar on `Baloch Nationality: Internal Colonisation of Balochistan by Pakistan' organised by RSS-inspired India Policy Foundation, the Baloch leader presented the historical and contemporary plight of the Baloch community due to the `Kill and Dump' policy of Pakistan in which more than 20000 people had been killed or abducted.

Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Bihar are some of the states that have made no progress since Swachh Bharat mission was launched nearly two years ago, according to an online survey across 19 states and 60 cities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had kicked off his pet programme in the national capital by taking up a broom in October 2014.The survey result released by the online citizen engagement platform LocalCircles has found while Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra have shown significant progress, the states showing marginal improvement include Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, West Bengal, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.

SBI chief Arundhati gets 1-year extension:

State Bank of India chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya has been granted one-year extension by the government.The move comes less than a week before her three-year term was set to end on October 6. This is the first time in the post-liberalisation era that the government has granted an extension to the chief of the country's largest bank. Bhattacharya, the first woman to head SBI, was also the first to get a three-year appointment where the term ended beyond the superannuation date for chairmen.

Country gets first normal rainfall in three years Deficit

Continues In Punjab, Haryana, West UP For the first time in three years, the country received normal rainfall in the monsoon season, which ended on Friday with an overall shortfall of 3% -within the normal range of +-4% but less than what the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast.Despite the IMD prediction of an “above normal“ monsoon not materializing, good rain in the crucial Julyearly August period boosted kharif sowing. Thereafter, bountiful showers in central India and Telangana also ended successive years of drought in these regions.This was a welcome change from the drought years, when the deficit was 12% (2014) and 14% (2015)
