One of the major features of the World Wide Web is the capability to create links between pages. These links are often viewed as analogues of citations in scientific publications (e.g. ROUSSEAU, 1997;BJORNEBORN & INGWERSEN, 2001; CRONIN, 2001). Links can lead to a different site or may lead to a page in the same site. Links for which the source and the target of the page are within the same site or domain are called selflinks. Instead of counting selflinks, we count selfsitations the number of pages on the site having a link or links pointing to the same site. The difference between selflinks and selfsitations is that for selfsitations a page with several selflinks is counted with multiplicity one. The reason for counting selfsitations instead of self links is technical. Commercial search engines report the number of pages with selflinks
and not the number of selflinks. The termsitation has been coined by ROUSSEAU (1997). In this paper we develop the measures selflinking and selflinked, which correspond to the classical measures for journals: selfciting and selfcited. We cancluate these rates for a number of academic institutions on the Web.
