Over 57,400 schemes to provide drinking water in rural areas
- Over 57,400 schemes are going on in different states to provide drinking water to the rural population and over Rs 4,300 crore utilised for the purpose in 2015-16, the government said on 11.08.2016. Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister Narendra Singh Tomar informed Lok Sabha that Rs 4,373 crore was allocated to states under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme in 2015-16, of which Rs 4,369.55 crore has been utilised.
Kudankulam nuclear project takes Modi-Putin bonding to a new high
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed his appreciation for Russian President Valdimir Putin when the two leaders met via videoconferencing while dedicating unit-I of the Kudankulam nuclear project, India's first nuclear power plant built by a foreign partner. It is perhaps not commonly known that at 1000 MW Kundankulam 1 is the largest single unit of electrical power in India.
Number of Indian students going to UK, US varsities to go up by 50%
- The number of Indian students going overseas for under-graduate and post-graduate studies is expected to increase by 50 per cent over the next five years due to a manifold increase in their family incomes, a placement expert said here on 11.08.2016.Indian students accounted for 4.3 per cent or 21,000 of the 493,570 international students in the UK in 2013-14, according to the British Council. There were 132,888 Indian students out of the 627,306 Asian students in the US in 2014-15, according to the Institute of International Education.
Chinese President Xi Jinping sending minister to do recce of Goa ahead of BRICS
- It is understood that Wang will visit the venue for BRICS Summit at Goa which will be attended by President Xi Jinping. It is also learnt that Wang would like to oversee preparations for the summit scheduled for October 15-16, 2016.
