No child worker in Tamil Nadu Garment Industry: Survey Report
- There are no child labourers in the garment industry in the country now as compared to the year 2000, says an audit conducted by the Netherlands-based NGO Fair Wear Foundation (FWF). The audit was conducted in various garment companies situated in Delhi, Noida, Tirupur and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka between 2013 and 2016.
New chief Law Officer of Tamil Nadu
- Designated senior advocate R Muthukumaraswamy was on Friday appointed as the advocate-general of Tamil Nadu, hours after it became known that incumbent advocate-general A L Somayaji had rendered his resignation. Muthukumaraswamy had served as the additional advocate-general of Tamil Nadu during the 2001-2006 Jayalalithaa regime.
India seeks to iron out wrinkles in relationship with Myanmar
- Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw will make his first visit to India on Saturday , giving India and Myanmar an opportunity to reset relations after a couple of years of distinct cooling of ties.It's U Htin Kyaw's first visit since he took over as President, but it has not escaped New Delhi's notice that Aung San Suu Kyi's first big foreign visit was to Beijing last week. Her visit to China preceded her forthcoming visit to the US in September, and she will only come to India in October for the BRICS-BIMSTEC summit in Goa. Aung San Suu Kyi is the foreign minister because a constitutional provision makes it impossible for her to be President, but she is the undisputed leader of the government.
High Court backs 147-yr-old Sufi tradition of worship at Haji Ali dargah shrine
- In a bold order evoking liberal Islamic principles, the Bombay high court on Friday said the religion does not deny women entry into mosques or dargahs.Throwing open the doors of saint Hali Ali Shah's mausoleum to women, the court also directed the state and the trust managing the shrine to take steps to ensure safety and security of women at the dargah. “The state is equally under an obligation to ensure fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles14, 15 and 25 of the Constitution are protected and that the right of access into the sanctum sanctorum of the Haji Ali dargah is not denied to women,'' said Justice Revati Mohite-Dere, who wrote the 56-page judgment for the bench.
World's biggest pension fund loses $52 billion in stock rout
- The world's biggest pension fund posted a $52 billion loss last quarter as stocks tumbled and the yen surged, wiping out all investment gains since it overhauled its strategy by boosting shares and cutting bonds.Japan's Government Pension Investment Fund lost 3.9%, or 5.2 trillion yen ($52 billion), in the three months ended June 30, reducing assets to 129.7 trillion yen, it said in Tokyo on Friday . That erases a 4.1 trillion yen investing return for the previous six quarters starting October 2014, the month it decided to put half its assets into equities.
India Inc foreign borrowings down 44% at $1.2 bn in July
- India Inc's overseas borrowings fell by 44% to $1.2 billion in July this year as against $2.14 billion in the same period a year ago.The Indian firms raised $183.7 million via approval route while rest $1.02 billion was raised by way of an automatic channel, showed Reserve Bank's data released on Friday . Under the approval route, Tikona Digital Networks raised $171 million for import of capital goods, while Vijayawada Tollway raised $11.07 million for road related works.
